Bioluminescence
As night falls over the Golfo Dulce something magical happens; any disturbance of the dark water causes fireworks, sparkling lights that dance through the water. These lights are caused by tiny micro-organisms called dinoflagellates which, when agitated, cause a chemical reaction that makes them glow. In the Golfo Dulce this bioluminescence is visible year round and, because there is very little light pollution to spoil the fun, wonderfully bright, plus we make sure to only offer this activity around the new moon as the full moon can be so bright.
As the light fades, board a boat and cruise out onto the serene waters, leaving a trail of bioluminescence in your wake. Far away from any light from the coast, start by dabbling your fingers in the water, creating patterns of light, before slipping gently into the water to bathe in the blue and green luminosity. You’ll even have a mask so you can completely submerge and see what it’s like to swim in clouds of swirling colour. It is a truly otherworldly experience.
